“What do you mean you know?” Lindsey inquired crossing his arms over his chest and studied Sam. Lindsey’s, “tell me,” sounded more like a request than an order and its tone startled Sam enough that he actually started before realizing what he was doing. He started with, “When I was six months old a demon came after me to keep a deal my mother made and killed her,” and went from there.
He told Lindsey about growing up in crappy hotels and being raised by a big brother who was little more than a child and a better father than his real father had been. He talked about being disowned for going to college. He talked about having a home for the first time ever even if it was a crappy dorm with a crappy room mate who had something under his bed all year that smelled dead. He told him about throwing rocksalt and holy water under there one night to make sure whatever it was wouldn’t attack him.
He told him about Jessica and falling in love and then watching it all go up in flames. HE told him about Dean and leaving Dean and missing Dean and Dean coming back to pull him back into hunting maybe not as kicking and screaming as Sam wanted to make it seem that first night standing out in the cold by the Impala. He told him about realizing that if Dean hadn’t done so Sam probably wouldn’t have survived this long, and his guilt over never making sure his big brother knew how much Sam appreciated that. He confessed to realizing normal life was a pipe dream, and knowing he’d never do anything but the family business and maybe secretly that didn’t even bother him anymore.
He told him about Azazel and being the hunter and the hunted at the same time. HE told him about Jake and Dean’s deal and Dean’s last year. He explained Ruby and the demons blood and his powers. Eventually he even explained Lucifer and Lilith and how he was responsible for this mess the world was in at the moment.
And when he got done Lindsey just nodded and said, “I guess you do know.”

When Sam woke up he was staring into the bluest eyes he had ever seen in his life. At some point during his story they had moved from outside on the porch to inside on the couch and had fallen asleep whispering random stories of their past. Somehow what should feel uncomfortable and wrong in the morning light instead felt, comfortable and familiar, as if he'd been waiting for Lindsey all his life.
“I never thought I would meet someone who understood,” Lindsey said softly still watching Sam almost as if the younger man was some rare treasure. Sam immediately decided he liked it because it had been a long time since someone actually looked at Sam and saw Sam for who he was and not some devil’s spawn in training. Sam wasn’t sure if even Jessica who hadn’t even known about all the crap in Sam’s life had looked at him the way Lindsey was right at that second, and for Sam that was more telling than anything else could ever be.
“I never thought I would meet anyone who would want to,” Sam admitted trying to study Lindsey impartially, but gave up because really, for once Castiel had hit it out of the ballpark. Lindsey was exactly Sam’s type for a guy, and Sam had tested it enough to know what his type of guy was. The ol’ saying that everyone experiments in college was more true for Sam than maybe anyone else at Stanford and finding out he liked guys was not only a pleasant surprise, but had explained a lot of other things in his life.
Although it had been a real bitch once he'd gone back onto the road with his big brother. Sam’s entire life was one big rubber band ball of secrets and one of the ones hidden deep in the middle of the thing was his bi-sexuality. Coming out to his brother in the midst of all the other crap that had happened since he’d come home – home being the Impala and Dean and crappy random hotel rooms – just wasn’t going to happen. Somehow in the middle of hunting the YED, dad dying, Sam getting kidnapped, Dean selling his soul, Dean’s last year, Dean’s dying, Dean’s resurrection, Sam’s fucking everything up from that point forward, there just hadn’t been time for the ol’, ‘I don’t do random pickups because I’d rather fuck that sexy blonde redneck over there with the drawl and the flannel and the I know what to do with you Sam Winchester than his cheep girlfriend wearing too much makeup and smelling of dime store perfume’ speech.
So, Sam hadn’t gotten around to it, and therefore had spent a lot of time celibate until the little guys demanded release and he actually managed to find a woman with more than half a brain that Sam could stand for more than two minutes. “My brother doesn’t know,” Sam blurted out then blushed at Lindsey’s raised eyebrow, realizing the older man had no idea what all had just gone on in Sam’s big brain. “About me being gay… or bi… or whatever,” Sam explained, or at least tried to, and when Lindsey smiled at him he figured he must not have done too badly of a job.
“I would imagine you’ve had more important things on your mind lately,” Lindsey recognized lifting a hand to brush some hair off Sam’s face. “Do you think it’s the angel’s doing that this is so not weird? Or do you think if we’d met on our own it would have been exactly like this?”
“Is it bad if I say I think it would have been like this regardless of heavenly being involvement because I know if this is something they ‘did’ I would never be able to be comfortable with it again?”
When Lindsey shook his head, Sam smiled and ducked his eyes smiling because he knew Lindsey got it… again.

Sam didn’t make his trek to town that day. Instead he and Lindsey spend the day unloading the truck, making their little cabin a home. Once the generator was unloaded and appliances were hooked up and the fridge stocked after a trip to the grocery for food, Sam found himself sitting on the couch again staring at his cell phone as Lindsey did something with food in the kitchen he promised would result in a) not fried or grease filled, and b) would be more than passably edible. With the generator Sam had been able to charge his phone and found he actually did get service out in the middle of nowhere once he had a full battery. “You gonna call your brother?”
Sam jumped slightly and looked up to see Lindsey standing in front of him with a worried frown on his face. “You been starin’ at that thing for half an hour.”
“Can’t,” Sam offered huskily and cleared the huge “I’m responsible for all his pain” sized lump out of his throat. “I can’t call Dean. He's busy cleaning up my mess.”
“You mean his mess?” Lindsey countered, eyebrow lifted again, and Sam frowned up at him.
“No, I mean my mess. I killed Lilith, I broke the last seal. My mess. “
“He made a deal, he went to hell, and he fell. His mess.”
“He went to hell to save me because I fucked up and let Jake kill me!”
Lindsey snorted and rolled his eyes at Sam. “Yeah, Sam, I’m sure bein’ the trained hunter you are that you just let that evil freak kill you.”
“You didn’t die on purpose. He chose to make a deal, he went to hell in accordance to said deal, he gave into the demons and fell. I know a little bit about demons and said evil crap, remember? Not to mention I am intelligent enough to know you can’t break the last seal without breaking the first one… or any of the others in between. He had just as much time to stop all this from happening as you did. All he had to do was stop one of those seals from breaking, but he didn’t. Not saying he’s incompetent, or that we should hang him from the nearest tree by his toenails, but let’s be real here Sam. This is NOT all on your shoulders. Frankly, it ain’t even on your brother’s shoulder. It’s on the fuckin’ angels and the fuckin’ demons! Do you really think you could have out willed heaven AND hell?”
“I’m sure you’re good Winchester, but ain’t no way even you are that good.”
“What do you mean heaven and hell?” Sam asked frowning confused. “The angels aren’t responsible for what I did.”
“The hell they ain’t! Come on Sam, you can’t possibly be that naive! Ain’t nothin’ happened they didn’t want to happen. They could have stepped in a long time ago and protect you from that damned demon. You were an innocent! Your mother had no business trading you for her husband’s life. They could have pulled your brother out of hell before he fell. They could have stepped in and stopped any one of those fuckin’ seals from breaking. They could have told you exactly what that fuckin’ demon bitch Ruby was up to. They didn’t because they want this war! They didn’t because they’re so fuckin’ arrogant they believe there’s no way they can’t win this war and they’re willing to ruin your and your brother’s lives to do it!”
“Sam, you never had a chance! I have no doubt that had you not followed along like a good little puppy with Ruby’s wishes they would have found some way to manipulate you into doing it. This ain’t all on you Sam! You’re a victim here as much as anything else. Me, I’m just a stupid bastard, but you… Jesus Sam you never had a fuckin’ chance!”
When Sam finally lifted his eyes, Lindsey felt like he’d been punched in the gut at the hurt and betrayal there, as if he’d been the one to steer Sam wrong all along instead of a bunch of otherworldly bastards who though humans nothing more than playthings. “So, what’s the point? What the hell am I fighting for if no one believes in me?”
“Ain’t never said no one believes in you, Sam, and the point is the same as it’s always been. There’s a crap load of people in this world that don’t even realize they’re in danger. They still think it’s business as normal. You don’t wanna interfere in your brother’s business… I get it, Sam. I honestly do. I ‘magine the two of you need time, but don’t cut him our completely. Let him know you’re only a phone call away, and while we’re waitin’ we’ll take care of all the other crap he don’t have time for.”
Nodding, Sam stood and slipped his phone in his pocket walking to stand in front of Lindsey. “I’ll think about it. I promise.” Sam said before cupping the back of Lindsey’s head with one of his big hands, and bending down to take the kiss he’d been thinking about all day. When Lindsey’s hands settled on Sam’s hips pulling him closer, Sam deepened the kiss, drawing him in further, learning, tasting, memorizing the man in his arms. When they broke, they were breathless but Sam felt good, maybe better than he had in awhile. This Lindsey was good for him, and Sam knew he wasn’t gonna let anyone or anything take him away from him.
“I wanna take it slow,” Sam said softly looking into Lindsey’s eyes blown and slightly glazed. “This is too important, this thing between us, to just jump in the bed and fuck like bunnies before we even know each other.”
“Yeah,” Lindsey agreed shaking his head before a grin split his face. “But damn boy that was fine! Holy shit you’re a kisser!”
Throwing his head back Sam laughed and pulled Lindsey in closer feeling his smile against the side of his neck. For the first time in a long time, Sam’s momentary happiness didn’t make him feel guilty… not even a little bit.

“Why are we going to South Dakota again?” Lindsey asked for probably the hundredth time since they’d shut up the cabin and told Doris they’d be gone for a while, but that they’d be back.
“Because some things you just can’t say over the phone,” Sam explained and was glad he was used to Dean otherwise he’d be really fuckin’ annoyed right at that moment. “And Bobby is family.”
Shrugging Lindsey got out of the truck waiting for Sam at the front. “Fair ‘nuff,” he said smiling and Sam eyed him suspiciously. “Does this mean you’re gonna stop asking me the same question? Or are you not done seeing how long 'til I lose it? ‘Cause I gotta tell you buddy. You’ve got a lotta work to do before you can outdo the Dean Winchester patented Big Brother Annoyance scheme. You’re like… a rank amateur and I grew up with the master.”
Lindsey snorted as they made their way across the parking lot of a dive restaurant in middle of nowhere America. “Big brothers are good line that,” Lindsey confirmed sounding somewhat fondly and Sam was intrigued. “You have siblings?”
“Five,” Lindsey confirmed. “Three older, two younger, so I guess I know what it’s like to be you and your brother. I’m starvin’ man. I hope this place has… What?” Lindsey noticed Sam had stopped and was staring at the alley running between the bar and the bookstore next door. When the younger man took off running, Lindsey swore and hurried after him down the dark alley hoping they weren’t gonna need real weapons, because he didn’t have much more than a hunting knife on him.
“Sam what the fuck…” Lindsey spat seeing Sam standing facing some young man, his shoulders stiff and feet spread with hands balled up in fists. Knowing a fighting stance when he saw one, Lindsey swore again before hurrying over to stand at the man’s back. “What Sam?”
“Meet Meg,” Sam snarled and Lindsey could feel the hate and anger coming off him in waves. “The bitch that possessed you? That freak bastard’s kid?” Sam only nodded, but Lindsey understood. Some things you just never forgave.
“Why little Sam, You have a brand new playmate, but what’s up with the escapee from hell trend Sammy? Feeling the need to be near your own kind? You can come and play with us anytime you know. No need to wallow with the wannabe’s.”
“What. Are. You. Doing. Here. Meg?” Sam said and Lindsey guessed it was not the first time he’d asked.
“I was bored,” Meg said nonchalantly waving a hand in the air. “It was so nice of you to let Luci out like that so we could come up and play.”
“I wasn’t trying to let him out, Meg,” Sam spat back, but the demon just laughed amused. “I know, Sammy. That’s what makes it so entertaining. Poor witto Sammy was trying so hard to save the world, and ended up damning it instead. We have so much to thank you for baby. I just don’t know where to start. I guess daddy was right about you after all.”
“What are you doing here? Or should I just send you back now?” Sam snarled at her and Lindsey couldn’t figure out why the demon couldn’t feel the power coming off Sam in waves. At first he thought she was just playing dumb, but when she just laughed in his face he realized she really couldn’t feel him.
“Come now Sam, we both know you don’t have the mojo anymore. The angels cleaned you all up to get your brother to keep his deal. You’re as bone dry as a well in the Mojave. But, just for kicks since I like you so much I’ll tell you. I’m here for the same thing I’m always here for Sam. Your brother’s head on a platter, and when he's dead I’m taking him back to hell to be my bitch! I think I’ll put him on a leash and let him sleep with my puppies.”
“Maybe you missed the memo, Meg, but Dean’s signed a deal with the other team. He’s out of your reach.” When she just laughed again, Lindsey had to hold Sam back from charging the bitch. No use in losing her before they’d milked all the information she had from here.
“Oh Sam, you really are cute. He maybe be playing for the good guys, but his soul is still ours. That whole… heavenly rest is only his if he kills Lucifer. Oh, I’m sorry baby; did they big bad angels leave that little part out? Must have been in the fine print. Don’t worry though. I’ll take real good care of him, and you can come visit him anytime! Bring the new boyfriend; we’d love to have him back as well.”
“I think,” Sam said, jaw clenched and body vibrating with the need to release whatever power he’d built up, “that it’s time for you to say goodbye, Meg.”
As the demon started choking and coughing, Lindsey saw the surprise spread on her face. He didn’t blame her. He was a little surprised himself. Sam had told him he wasn’t doing the demon blood thing since Cas and his angel buddies had cleaned him up, so he wasn’t sure where he was getting this power from, but was smart enough to know not to jump to conclusions.
He found it fascinating to watch the process, but when the boy collapsed he hurried over, sighing when he realized the kid was dead. Deciding it unwise to stick around with a dead body in the vicinity, Lindsey hurried them back to the truck and sped off… dinner could wait. They were only a couple hours from this Bobby’s house anyway.
“When Ruby said the power was always in me, I didn’t know she meant always always as in pre-demon blood infection at 6 months. Apparently though it was.” Sam snorted self-depreciatingly and Lindsey sighed. “Ain’t that a kicker?”
“You had no way of knowing, Sam.” Lindsey offered softly.
“I should have.”
“How?” Lindsey asked patiently. “They give you some kinda manual I didn’t get when I was born?” When Sam didn’t answer, Lindsey just sighed and shifted the conversation. “So, is the bitch gone this time for good?”
Nodding Sam smiled darkly and Lindsey shivered turning his attention back to the road. “Dead and gone just like her daddy and her big brother, may they not rest in peace.” Leaning forward Sam turned on the radio, and Lindsey didn’t bitch about the classic rock station once in the rest of the trip to Bobby’s.
